Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves out incredibly elaborate forms that are hard to believe are made of wood, and then finishes them with a three-dimensional texture using a technique called "makiji urushi," which involves applying lacquer to the wood base and then adhering polishing powder.

The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless dark black.
You can directly feel the strong and weak shadows created by the unevenness of the makiji.
He also produces a "kuro-suzu" (black tin) series, which is made by mixing tin powder into lacquer and then polishing it.

And the theme of this third exhibition at our shop is "white."
New works have been created using "shirourushi" (white lacquer), which is considered difficult to handle in lacquerware, and "sabi urushi" (rust lacquer), a unique technique that is three-dimensional and powerful.

We invite you to experience the surprising lightness of these pieces, which have a sculptural, profound color and form.
Please enjoy Funaki-san's vessels, which transcend the conventional concept of lacquerware.
