Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves out extremely intricate forms that defy what one might expect from woodworking, and then applies "Makiji-urushi," a technique that involves coating the wood with lacquer and then adhering polishing powder, resulting in a three-dimensional texture.

The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, dark black.
One can directly experience the strong and weak gradations of light and shadow created by the unevenness of the firewood texture.
He also offers a "Kuro-suzu" (black tin) series, made by mixing tin powder with lacquer and then polishing it.

And the theme of this third exhibition at our store is "white."
He has newly developed "shiro-urushi" (white lacquer), which is considered difficult to work with, and "sabi-urushi" (rust lacquer), a unique technique that creates a three-dimensional and powerful effect.

We invite you to experience the surprisingly light weight despite the sculptural, profound color and form.
Please enjoy Funaki's vessels, which transcend the conventional idea of lacquerware.
