Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves out incredibly intricate forms that are hard to believe are made of wood. He then uses a technique called "makiji-urushi" (lacquer with sprinkled powder) where he applies lacquer to the wooden base and adheres polishing powder, resulting in a three-dimensional texture.

The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, dark black that perfectly matches the description.
You can directly experience the varying intensity of shadows created by the unevenness of the makiji technique.
He also produces a "kuro-suzu" (black tin) series, where he mixes tin powder into the lacquer and polishes it.

The theme of this exhibition, his third at our store, is "white."
He has newly developed "shiro-urushi" (white lacquer), which is considered difficult to work with in lacquerware, and "sabi-urushi" (rust lacquer), a unique, three-dimensional, and powerful technique.

We invite you to experience the surprising lightness of his pieces despite their sculptural weight and form.
Please enjoy Funaki-san's vessels, which break free from conventional notions of lacquerware.
