Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves out incredibly elaborate forms that defy expectations for woodwork, then uses a technique called "makiji-urushi" (sprinkled-ground lacquer) where lacquer is applied to the wood and then powdered clay is adhered, resulting in a three-dimensional texture.
The black of his works is truly a "jet black," an impeccable, dark black.
You can directly experience the subtle gradations of light and shadow created by the unevenness of the makiji.
He also produces a "kuro-suzu" (black tin) series, made by mixing tin powder into lacquer and then polishing it.
And the theme for this third exhibition at our store is "white."
New works include "shirourushi" (white lacquer), which is considered difficult to work with in lacquer art, and "sabi-urushi" (rust lacquer), a unique technique that creates a three-dimensional and powerful effect.
We invite you to experience the surprisingly light weight of these pieces, despite their sculptural and substantial colors and forms.
Please enjoy Funaki's vessels, which go beyond the conventional concept of lacquerware.
