These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.
Most of Ms. Iwata's works are created using the hand-building technique (a method of building up shapes by coiling clay into rope-like strands), making each piece unique.
Her collection includes three types of works: "Tanka," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho," which features drawings created with slip; and "Haiyu," which uses ash from natural plants to create a beautiful, unique green glaze.
Ms. Iwata previously painted.
Her interest in soil grew from painting, leading her to transition to ceramics.
The forms of her works, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, and her pursuit of the texture of clay and glazes, result in truly unique pieces.
