Introducing works by wood and lacquer artist Rentaro Arakawa.
Mr. Arakawa creates works using discarded wood and old timber he has collected himself, incorporating wormholes, cracks, and chips, and finishing them with lacquer.
When I visited his studio, I was very impressed to hear him talk about how he loved wood and collected timber even before he became a woodworker, as he looked at numerous pieces of old wood.
Afterward, he began woodworking through self-study, discovered lacquer, and arrived at his current style.
Arakawa's works combine the natural strength of wood with the abundant beauty of lacquer.
We invite you to experience their lightness and ease of use, contrary to their complex and robust appearance.
