Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves extremely elaborate forms that are hard to believe are made of wood, and finishes them with a three-dimensional texture using a technique called "Maki-ji Urushi," which involves applying lacquer to the wood and adhering polishing powder.
The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, dark black that perfectly embodies the term.
One can directly perceive the varying shades created by the unevenness of the maki-ji.
He also produces a "Kurosuki" series, where tin powder is mixed into lacquer and then polished.
The theme for this third exhibition at our store is "White."
New creations include "white lacquer," which is considered difficult to work with, and the "sabi-urushi" series, which features a unique, three-dimensional and powerful technique.
We invite you to experience the surprisingly light weight of these pieces, given their sculptural, substantial colors and forms.
Please enjoy Funaki's vessels, which defy the traditional concept of lacquerware.
