These are works by Minoru Haga, who produces pottery in Sera-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture.

Haga learned Mino ware in Gifu, a pottery producing region, and then worked as a potter while working at an automobile factory. In 2010, he opened a studio in Sera-cho, close to his hometown of Fuchu City, to concentrate on his creative activities.
His works embody conflicting impressions simultaneously: a dynamic, inorganic impression that evokes the beauty and harshness of nature, yet also a slight human softness added to a simple form.

"Ume-yaki" (burying and firing) is a unique technique that involves bisque firing → glaze firing → and then burying the piece in split firewood and refiring it in a wood-fired kiln.
This method has a very high chance of failure, but it produces ceramics with complex expressions, so Haga is dedicated to it.

"Hagihaku" (peeled white) is a new endeavor using white glazes, but it includes a process of intentionally peeling off the applied glaze to create a weathered texture.
The price range is affordable, and the simple color tones enhance the food.

"Kurogin" (black silver) is a silver technique where the rugged texture of the clay is subtly visible.
The glare is suppressed, creating a piece where a metallic texture and the black of the earth are harmoniously integrated.

Haga presents the inherent irreversibility of pottery making with utmost sincerity.
What lies there is not a simple contrast of destruction and regeneration, but an attitude of confronting "irretrievability" itself.
We hope you will enjoy Haga's diverse techniques.

*Minoru Haga's works value偶然性 (fortuitousness), so there are significant individual differences.
While the photos show pieces of generally the same size, the patterns and precise sizes vary, so please consider them as examples.
"Ume-yaki" has a stronger random quality than "Hagihaku." Please be aware of this beforehand.
