These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.
Most of Ms. Iwata's works are made using the coiling technique (a method of building up shapes by stacking coil-shaped clay), so each piece is one-of-a-kind.
Her collection consists of three types: "Tanka (carbonization)," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho (rust-hair slipware)," which features designs made with slip; and "Haiyu (ash glaze)," which uses natural plant ash to create a beautiful, unique green glassy texture.
Ms. Iwata previously painted.
She transitioned to pottery as her interest in soil grew from her painting.
The forms of her works, with attention paid to every detail, and her pursuit of the texture of clay and glazes, result in truly unique pieces.
