These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who makes pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.
Most of Ms. Iwata's works are created using the hand-building technique (a method of building up shapes by coiling clay into rope-like strands), making each piece unique.
Her works include three main lines: "Tanka," which features a matte, metallic black color achieved through repeated firing; "Sabike Kesho," which uses slip to create painted designs; and "Haiyu," which uses natural plant ash to create a unique and beautiful green glaze.
Ms. Iwata previously painted.
Her interest in soil grew from painting, leading her to switch to pottery.
Her works, with their meticulously crafted forms and pursuit of the texture of clay and glazes, are truly unique.
