Minato Kanako Plate of Flowers L

Glass artist Kanako Minato creates her works in Akita Prefecture.

She uses a technique called "pate de verre," in which glass powder and fragments are packed into a mold made from a clay prototype and then fired in an electric kiln.

This is a very time-consuming and labor-intensive method, as the glass is removed from the plaster mold by breaking it piece by piece.

Unlike other glass techniques, pate de verre has its own unique charms, such as bubbles trapped between layers of fine glass particles, delicate gradations created with colored glass, and a solid, substantial appearance.
