Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an expression that retains a sense of ruggedness.
This coexistence is where Ohashi's appeal lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which she fires only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which she uses daily.
She creates her works by going back and forth between processes, such as using the ash produced in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, she is also attempting to re-fire works that were initially fired in the kerosene kiln, in the wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having journeyed through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns once again into the flames.
The powerful strength that evokes the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts the materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the current state of Mutsumi Ohashi's work.
