Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly draw out the nature of clay.
The beauty of modern form coexists with a rugged, raw aesthetic.
This coexistence is where Ohashi's appeal lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which is used daily.
He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, such as using ash produced in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, he is also undertaking an attempt to re-fire works that were fired in a kerosene kiln in a wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having gone through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once again.
The power that evokes the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts materials and processes.
We hope you will experience Mutsumi Ohashi's current artistic journey.
