Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The rough texture and modern sculptural beauty.
The coexistence of these two elements is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which she fires only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which she uses daily, selectively.
She uses the ash produced in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and fires it in the kerosene kiln, creating her works by moving back and forth between processes.
This time, she is also attempting to refire works that were initially fired in the kerosene kiln in the wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having gone through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The power that evokes the energy of nature, and the quiet gaze that confronts materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the current work of Mutsumi Ohashi.
