Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The rough texture and the beauty of modern forms.
The coexistence of these two elements is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which is used daily, depending on the situation.
Ash produced in the wood-fired kiln is used as ash glaze and fired in the kerosene kiln, for example, creating works by going back and forth between processes.
This time, he is also undertaking an attempt to re-fire works that were fired in a kerosene kiln in a wood-fired kiln.
Each work, having circulated through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The power that conveys the energy of nature and a quiet gaze that confronts the materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the present state of Mutsumi Ohashi's work.
