Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an untamed, rugged appearance.
It is in this coexistence that Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which he fires only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which he uses daily.
He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, such as using ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, he is also undertaking an attempt to re-fire works that were fired in the kerosene kiln, in the wood-fired kiln.
Each and every piece, having cycled through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The power emanating from the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze confronting the materials and processes.
We hope you can experience the present state of Mutsumi Ohashi's work.
