Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an untamed texture.
That coexistence is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Mr. Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and an oil kiln, which is used daily.
He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, such as using ash created in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the oil kiln.
This time, he is also attempting to re-fire works that were fired in an oil kiln in a wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, moving through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The power that conveys the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts the materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the present state of Mutsumi Ohashi.
