Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly draw out the properties of clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an unrefined aesthetic.
This coexistence is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and an oil-fired kiln, which is used daily, depending on the piece.
He uses the ash produced in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and fires it in the oil-fired kiln, creating his works by moving back and forth between processes.
This time, he is also attempting to re-fire works that were initially fired in the oil-fired kiln in the wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having gone through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once again.
The power emanating from the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze confronting the materials and processes.
We hope you can experience the present work of Mutsumi Ohashi.
