Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an untamed, rugged expression.
This coexistence is where Ohashi-san's charm lies.
Ohashi-san uses both a wood-fired kiln, which she fires only a few times a year, and an oil-fired kiln, which she uses daily.
She creates her works by going back and forth between processes, such as using the ash produced in the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the oil-fired kiln.
This time, she is also attempting to re-fire works that were fired in the oil-fired kiln in the wood-fired kiln.
Each work, having circulated through the elements of clay, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once again.
The power emanating from the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze confronting materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the present state of Mutsumi Ohashi's work.
